Wiremold for a Garage Door Opener Ceiling Electrical Receptacle

 
Dear Mr. Electrician: How is Wiremold surface metal raceway used?
Answer: As an attractive alternative to electrical conduit, Wiremold is used where surface wiring needs additional protection.  Below are some photos of a Wiremold installation that was used to replace an old extension cord that was powering the garage door opener
 
 
A Wiremold V5751-2, two gang extension adapter was used to connect to an existing two gang outlet box already in the wall.

Wiremold V500 surface metal raceway is an approved grounding conductor, however a grounding conductor wire was pushed in with the other conductors on this job.

You can just about see the edge of the Wiremold V5703 Support Clip that keeps the raceway attached to the wall and ceiling from behind.  I use a rubber mallet to bang the raceway into the clips.

By bringing the Wiremold V500 surface metal raceway out the side of the extension adapter I was able to miss the existing ceiling light.

A Wiremold V5745 switch and receptacle box was mounted to the ceiling using toggle bolts.

For a ceiling electrical receptacle it is best to locate the GFCI protection somewhere readily accessible so that it can be tested monthly.

Wiremold V500 surface metal raceway can be cut with a hacksaw.  The end needs to be filed to get rid of burrs and sharp edges after cutting.

Using Wiremold V500 surface metal raceway is a fast, simple method to install wiring on the surface and is quite durable.
